Motorist along the Sagamu-Benin-Lagos Expressway staged a protest in response to the spate of armed robbery attacks in the area. The drivers blocked the expressway with their vehicles and vowed that no vehicle would be allowed to travel along the route.
Motorists who departed for Lagos from Benin as early as 5 AM were held in the gridlock till 3 PM. It took the intervention of the Edo State Police Commissioner, the SSG and DSS director to control the situation and also listen to the pleas of the driver.
Mr Obika Orakwe who was a victim of a recent robbery recalled the harrowing experience and displayed his bullet riddled bus to the commissioner. Mr Obika stated they had left onitsha at about 10:30 PM and that they were attacked at Okada at around 1 AM.
The attack killed the conductor of the bus and several other vehicles were also robbed. He further stated that the drivers were angered that the police could do nothing to protect them.
The Edo State Police Commissioner Haliru Gwandu assured the drivers and passengers alike that the police force would provide adequate security and the perpetrators will be bought to justice.
