Eight people were killed in a stampede at Malawi’s National Stadium, during the country’s independence day celebration.
The stampede occurred when the gates to the Lilongwe Bingu stadium were opened and the crowds trooped in to witness the presidential address and a football match.
National police spokesman James Kadadzera said “Eight people — seven children aged around eight years old, and one adult died.”
Over 62 people were injured and were receiving treatment at Lilongwe’s main hospital.
President Peter Mutharika said “My government will do all it can to assist the bereaved families.”
The president went on to cancel his traditional independence day speech and skipped the football match.
