To advance, the holders needed to overcome the Ivorians, but they fell behind 3-0 to goals from Franck Kessie, Ibrahim Sangare, and Nicolas Pepe, with Riyad Mahrez missing a penalty.
Sofiane Bendebka got one back for the Ivory Coast, but Sebastien Haller sealed the win for the Ivory Coast who will face Egypt in the last 16.
