The acting president of Nigeria, Yemi Osinbajo today declared every Thursday as “Tax Thursday”.
Osinbajo speaking during the launching of the Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAID), said the programme was aimed at creating awareness.
The programme according to the acting president is expected to last for a year and will target 4 million new taxpayers across all the 36 states in the country.
The programme also comes in addition to previous announcements by the minister of finance to hire 7,500 tax officers. The tax officers are also to serve as means of creating tax awareness to citizens of the country.
Osinbajo also signed an executive order backing the implementation of the voluntary assets and income declaration scheme (VAIDS).
The government is hoping to increase its tax revenue generation in the next couple of years.
