Brazil’s former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has been sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison for bribery and corruption.
Lula who ruled Brazil from 2003-2010 was sentenced for accepting a luxury seaside apartment and $1.1 million.
Lula is however to remain free pending an appeal according to anti-corruption judge Sergio Moro.
The conviction has landed a huge blow to the prospect of Lula making a political comeback in presidential elections in October.
Lula has however continued to deny taking any bribes during or after his presidency, describing the investigation as a campaign to prevent his return to power.
