Kenyan Politicians Receive Salary Cuts

Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Kenya independent Salaries and remuneration Commission say the salaries of Kenya’s president and members of parliament will be slashed after next month’s strongly contested elections.

The decision was taken in an effort to reduce the wage bill in the public sector.

The president’s gross salary will be cut from $16,000 to $14,000 a month, while that of MPs will fall from $7,200 to $6,100 a month.

Added allowance of MPs, including a car grant and an allowance for attending plenary sessions of parliament, have also been removed.
