Nigerian Army Activates New Division

The Nigerian Army has formally inaugurated its new 6 Division.

The division was created 8 November 2016 to increase the military’s presence in the Niger Delta region, where bunkering, kidnapping, and militant activity remain serious problems.

Defence Minister, Mansur Dan-Ali, said “All these threats heighten the state of insecurity in the region and negatively affect gas and oil production, as well as other economic activities.”

Army chief of staff Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai said 6 Division consists of 2 Brigade – which was previously based in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers state, but has since been moved to Akwa Ibom state and two newly established brigades: 16 Brigade in Bayelsa state, and 63 Brigade in Delta state.
