Pouille leads Davis Cup champions France against Italy

French number one Lucas Pouille will aim to get the defending champions off to the best possible start in their Davis Cup quarter-final against Italy at Genoa on Friday. Pouille takes on Andreas Seppi with France captain Yannick Noah then fielding world number 80 Jeremy Chardy against Italy’s top player Fabio Fognini in Friday’s second singles.

Noah is gambling on Chardy’s unbeaten Davis Cup record of five wins from five rather than the higher ranked Adrian Mannarino with the world 25 proving less assured on the clay surface used in Genoa. Unusually none of the French regulars Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Richard Gasquet, Gaël Monfils and Gilles Simon figure in Noah’s team with most absent due to injury.

The winner of this last eight match-up will go on to face either Spain or Germany in the September semi-finals.
