Russia kickstarted their confederations cup on a good note as they beat New Zealand 2-0.
President Vladimir Putin kicked off the tournament by addressing the Krestovsky stadium.
A blemish on the opener however was the fact that there were many empty seats in the stands further racing questions against Russia as to whether they were perfect host for the tournament.

Two goals in both halves by Boxall an own goal in the 32nd minute and Smolov in the 69th minute sealed the win for the Russian team.
The game itself was an open contest with plenty of chances, most of which fell to Russia, which were clearly the better side throughout.
