Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, has signed legislation granting him the right to remain in office until 2036.

According to Reuters, the 68-year-old president signed a bill on Monday that allows him to stretch his 20-year rule until he turns 83.

Putin’s second consecutive and fourth overall presidential term expires in 2024, the year in which Russia’s previous Constitution would have forced him to resign.

If re-elected, he will serve as Russia’s president until 2036, making him the country’s longest-serving leader after Josef Stalin and Peter the Great.
