Zambia Declares State Of Emergency

Zambia's President Edgar Lungu

Zambian President Edgar Lungu says his decision to put in place a state of emergency in his country is because he was only trying to bring sanity to the country.

President Lungu warned that those who thought he was turning into a dictator failed to understand the seriousness of the security situation in the country.

The rivalry between Lungu and main opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema is said to have driven the country to the point of division following disputed elections in August last year.

Mr Lungu said the police had been given the powers to deal with those believed to be behind the crisis.
